When I look out of my kitchen window and see the potted plants with flowers bobbing in the breeze, my eye is immediately drawn away from the drab. There are unsightly things my gaze readily wanders to in the winter’s absence of color, but in the spring, I hardly notice those things even though they remain in full view. The color is what sets spring apart from winter. Without these vivid hues, gray would prevail, and the ugly would remain the focus.
Faith is our spring. It provides color and texture and beauty, which draw the spiritual eye away from the withered, the unsightly, and the mundane. Faith blooms most vibrantly amid change and irritants, much like flowers emerge at the same time as fluctuating temperatures and allergy-inducing pollen. In fact, we can’t have the colors of faith without the accompanying adjustments and nuisances that provoke that faith. We’d continue in winter’s lull with its death, hidden potential, and stifling hum-drum, but shifting temperatures alter our lukewarm state, and pollen-like discomfort challenges us to mature. Our faith buds, then flowers into full bloom.
With its profusion of color, faith draws our focus away from the ugly, the lifeless, and the futile. Like spring, it resonates with possibility and proclaims the anthem of promise. Faith rolls away the stone of every hindrance and announces the resurrection of dreams, potential, and beauty. Amid the provocation, and perhaps because of it, faith arises to divert attention from circumstances and facts. It stands out, proclaiming truth in the face of what is and what has been. This truth affirms the abundant life, the everlasting hope, and the unspeakable joy that God’s Word declares. Faith’s multi-hued vibrancy is spring that blooms in every season of our lives.
