ABIDE
New Testament Greek-To stay in a given place, state, or expectancy; to continue, to dwell, to endure, to be present, to stand, to tarry, to persevere.
Jesus said, "abide in me, and I in you." He also instructed "abide in the vine." In addition, He said we are to "abide in his love," and let His words abide in us.
When I read these verses with the definitions "to stay expecting and to persevere," they take on new meaning for me. An expectant attitude as I dwell in the vine is one of anticipation of the things God has in store for me as well as realization that He is excitedly awaiting my response to Him. After all, He is abiding (staying expectant) in me.
Furthermore, if my abiding takes on the meaning of perseverance, then I'm not merely chilling out with God, I'm moving forward in Him. By the same token, His perseverance in me indicates He's not finished with me yet!
When I make my dwelling in God, and He makes His abode in me, exciting and fruitful things happen in and through me. The conditions are met whereby I have limitless access to the power if God. It's in abiding that I can "ask what (I) will and it shall be done..." Sounds like a wonderful way to hang out!
