After Cain killed Abel, Adam and Eve had a son named Seth. Seth's son was Enosh. The Bible says that after Enosh was born "...men began to call on the name of the Lord." What happened before that? Did Adam and Eve have guilt or resentment that silenced their conversation about God? Or had Cain's anger become the ravine that prevented his children from knowing God? Somewhere amid the taming a cursed land and the "multiplied sorrow in conception," relationship with God had been sacrificed. The precious heritage of paradise was relegated to a memory of yesteryear, but in Enosh's day, people began to cry out to God and to identify themselves as God's children. Perhaps Seth ignited hope in Adam and Eve and stories about their time with God again circled around the family dinner table. The important thing is something clicked; something resurrected a desire to connect with God.
What have we left untold? Are there God-experiences we've had that we have failed to relay to the upcoming generation? Have we allowed our own shortcomings and subsequent feelings of ineptitude or our own bitterness to cut out our tongues of praise? Has life's demands crowded in and robbed our voice? Perhaps it is time for hope to be born--hope that will let what God has been connect with what God will be.
