Tip/Tidbit: Look around today. Who’s in crisis? Who has a need? Who is bogged down with trouble? Take a minute to absorb their pain as your own, and let your compassion move you to pray, to comfort, to help them in their hour of distress.
The root word in compassion is passion. People have feelings, strong feelings. They are passionate. About sports. About kids. About rights. About money. Compassion is harnessing that element of the human spirit and directing those strong feelings toward someone else in an effort to alleviate that person’s pain. You can’t have compassion without passion, and you can’t have compassion without taking action. Just like you can’t feel passionate about a sports team and never utter an opinion about it, watch one of its games, or buy its paraphernalia, you can’t have compassion for someone and contain it inside your heart. Compassion must be vented. Compassion reaches out with a touch. It offers comfort. It meets a need. Compassion isn't for yourself. It is by definition directed at someone else. Compassion requires thinking about others instead of your own trouble. It demands that you view their need with such intensity that you are compelled to do something about it.
